    Description

Extremely Handsome and Rare Matched Prints of California Naval Rescue. This lot consists of a set of hand-colored lithographs printed by J. H. Bufford of Boston in the early 1850s. They were based on eye-witness drawings done by Edwin Moody. Each print measures 21" x 16". The first of the suite is titled "Wreck on Steamship Union on the Coast of Lower California, July 5th 1851." We see the steamship buffeted by waves, possibly breaking apart, its flag upside down (the distress signal), cattle and men swimming ashore. The second of the suite is titled "View at San Quentin Bay, Lower California. July 20th 1851. Embarkation of wrecked passengers from steamship UNION, on board steamship NORTHERNER. Capt. Henry Randall." This view depicts the shipwrecked survivors on shore in the process of getting into rescue boats and rowing out towards the steamship Union. Each print has been mounted onto acid-free sheets for conservation and has been neatly matted. They are listed in Peter's "California on Stone", page 91, plate 47.

You reach a customer base that is in many ways completely unknown to the major auction houses, and your marketing to this base is as professional as one could hope for. As I continue to wind down my holdings.
