    More Information:

These prints from the first edition of Volume II of Nederlandsche Vogelen (Amsterdam: 1789).

Cornelius Nozeman (1721-1786), a Dutch apothecary and clergyman, compiled the first comprehensive description of the birds of Holland in his mammoth Nederlandsche Vogelen, with sensitive and delicate engravings of birds, their nests, and their eggs rendered by Christiaan Sepp. The huge project (at the time the costliest book ever published) took 60 years to complete, continuing well after Nozeman's and Sepp's deaths. Only the first two volumes contain work directly attributable to Nozeman and Sepp; the hand-colored prints offered here are from the second volume, published in Amsterdam in 1789.
