1836 Hand-Colored Lithograph of Wa-Na-Ta, Grand Chief of the Sioux, published by F. W. Greenough, Philadelphia. Drawn, printed, and colored at I. T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment (from a painting by Charles Bird King). Chief Wanata was one of the greatest men of the Sioux nation, the leader of the Yankton branch that flourished during the early 1800s. He fought with his father against the Americans and was wounded during the War of 1812 at Sandusky. He later professed friendship toward the United States. Wananta's devotion to uniting and strengthening his tribes in their wars with the Chippewas and Iowas led him to be recognized as Grand Chief of the entire Sioux nation. This beautifully hand-colored litho shows this noble chief in native costume, holding a rifle. Near excellent condition, with only the lightest hint of foxing here and there, 15" x 21" in size. Interestingly, the original painting from which this was taken was part of a series of Indian portraits commissioned by the government in the 1820s. The originals were destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire.
