[Mexican War] "Storming of Chapultepec - Quitman's Attack", a hand-colored lithograph from George Wilkins Kendall, The War Between The United States And Mexico Illustrated, Embracing Pictorial Drawings of All the Principle Conflicts by Carl Nebel. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1851. Image size 16.5" x 10.75", with margins 23.5" x 17.75"; at left beneath image: "C. Nebel fecit.", at right: "Bayot et Bichebois litho", the number "11" handwritten in pencil at top right corner. Soiling at all edges, particularly at top; with excellent color and detail, the colorplate is in near fine condition. The artist has portrayed the resistance armed against General John Quitman as he made his advance against the Mexican citadel Chapultepec, which can be seen in the background. Mortar has struck, and the slain and wounded are pictured in the center, with Quitman's troops continuing their assault. The eventual fall of Chapultepec was a critical victory. It resulted in the entire Mexican line falling back to the gates of Mexico City. The combat resulted in 2,000 Mexican and 450 American casualties.Shipping, Taxes, Terms and Bidding
