    Description

[Mexican War] "Molino del Rey - Attack Upon the Molino", a hand-colored lithograph from George Wilkins Kendall, The War Between The United States And Mexico Illustrated, Embracing Pictorial Drawings of All the Principle Conflicts by Carl Nebel. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1851. Image size 17" x 10.75", with margins 23.5" x 17.75"; at left beneath image: "C. Nebel fecit.", at right: "Bayot litho", the number "8" is handwritten in pencil at top right corner. Very light soiling to all edges of wide margins, well away from image; with excellent color and detail, the colorplate is in near fine condition with a few small stray spots. The Molino del Rey was one of the three key points held by the Mexicans as they fell back to a defensive position. Just two miles from the gates of Mexico City, it was critical to defend, and the resistance posed by Brigadier General Antonio León was evident. American forces, under General William J. Worth, would eventually prevail, but at the cost of losing one in four men. The artist has filled the foreground with slain soldiers, including a cavalry officer who has been shot and is about to fall of his horse.
