    Description

    [Mexican War] "Capture of Monterey", a hand-colored lithograph from George Wilkins Kendall, The War Between the United States and Mexico Illustrated, Embracing Pictorial Drawings of All the Principle Conflicts by Carl Nebel. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1851. Image size 16.75" x 10.75", with margins 23.5" x 17.75"; at left beneath image: "C. Nebel fecit.", at right: "Bayot lith", the number "2" is handwritten in pencil at top right corner. Soiling and wear at all edges of wide margins, especially so at top, with creasing at both right corners, all well away from the image; with excellent color and detail, the colorplate is in fine condition with clean colors and detail. The capture of Monterey resulted on September 25, 1846 after heavy skirmishing. Although General Zachary Taylor was able to cut-off General Pedro Ampudia's forces of 5,000 men with a two-pronged assault and systematic bombardment, he nevertheless acquiesced to General Ampudia's request for a parlay. The two generals agreed on an eight week long armistice, during which time Ampudia's forces were allowed to withdraw with their arms leaving Monterey to the Americans.
