    Description

[Mexican War] "Battle of Buena Vista", a hand-colored lithograph from George Wilkins Kendall, The War Between the United States and Mexico Illustrated, Embracing Pictorial Drawings of All the Principle Conflicts by Carl Nebel. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1851. Image size 17" x 10.75", with margins 23.5" x 17.75"; at left beneath image: "C. Nebel fecit.", at right: "Bayot lith", the number "3" is handwritten in pencil at top right corner. Soiling at all edges of wide margins, especially so at top, with wear at all corners, including tiny chips at both top corners, all well away from the image; with excellent color and detail, the colorplate is in fine condition with clean colors and detail. The dramatic battle of Buena Vista depicts General Taylor's men in the foreground, with Santa Anna's massive forces of 20,000 men receding into the vast horizon. Largely outnumbered, Taylor refused to surrender to Santa Anna. The Mexican forces would eventually retreat claiming victory; at the cost of 3500 Mexican soldiers versus 650 American dead.
