    Description

[Mexican War] "Battle at Churubusco", a hand-colored lithograph from George Wilkins Kendall, The War Between The United States And Mexico Illustrated, Embracing Pictorial Drawings of All the Principle Conflicts by Carl Nebel. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1851. Image size 17" x 10.75", with margins 23.5" x 17.75"; at left beneath image: "C. Nebel fecit.", at right: "Bayot litho", the number "7" is handwritten in pencil at top right corner. Very light soiling to all edges of wide margins, well away from image, with a small tear at top right corner; excellent color and detail, the colorplate is in near fine condition with stray spotting across the sky which does not distract from the dramatic scene depicted in the foreground . The Battle of Churubusco, fought on August 20, 1847, resulted in the loss of 1,000 American soldiers. A large tree, hit by mortar, dominates the foreground of the lithograph. Dead and dying soldiers lie at its base as General Scott's troops continue their onslaught in the background.
