    Description

    Polychromed Cartonnage Fragment
    Roman-Egypt.
    Ca. 100-400 A.D.
    12" x 7-1/2".
Polychrome section of a mummy cartonnage, this section would have covered the chest area. The center horizontal frieze displays the four sons of Horus in profile, Duamutef, the babooon-headed god, Khebsenuf, the falcon-headed deity, Anubis, the jackal-headed deity, and Amset, the humanheaded deity. These deities also personify the canopic jars containing the lungs, intestines, stomach, and liver prospectively of the deceased. Below is a partial figure of the winged deity Nut, and above are four identical figures, probably of Amset, wearing a sun-disk crown. All are outlined in black with red-ochre, blue-green, and white pigments against the yellow background. Some losses at edges and in upper left scene, two loose fragments, but colors still vibrant. Fragile, needs to be backed and framed.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
