Pistol Cane: with Carved Wood Monkey Head Handle. The mechanism is an unusual variety of rim-fire pistol. The breech opens to the left side by pulling a spring-loaded hammer/lever. A cartridge is locked in place. The hammer is released by pushing a firing button on the right side. It appears that the pistol uses a 9mm rim-fire shot cartridge. The handle is a realistically carved monkey with a sterling collar. Originally the handle/pistol was disengaged by pushing a steel release button. The original shaft is missing. The shaft included is a damaged replacement. One glass eye is missing. Well worth restoration. C. 1880.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
