Philadelphia Centennial Sampler. A very unusual souvenir from the 1876 Centennial celebration in Philadelphia. The piece is half brochure and half Sampler to be created by the fairgoer. The 10.5" x 14" piece has a printed black and white and quite lovely lithograph of the Horticulture Hall at the International Exhibition as the bottom half of the page. The top half is perforated for needlepoint so that the the fairgoer can create his or her Sampler in thread. It was stenciled with the design. There are bits of a beige design where the person had not completed the tapestry. At the top are the dates 1776-1876 with draped flags around the Liberty Bell; the bell was done accurately with a bit of black thread called for to indicate the crack in the bell. Below it reads "United We Stand." An incredibly rare sampler. Minor flaws, but overall near mint condition. From the collection of Norm Bolotin.
