Patriotic Eagle Stern-board Carving. This piece of nineteenth century folk art measures 41" x 21" x 8" and depicts an American eagle in the half-round, perched on a piece of rope, clutching an American shield. The artwork was likely used to decorate the stern-board or pilot's house of a steam boat. It is constructed of wood and gesso (plaster) and hand-painted in shades of green, red, white, gold and blue. It appears to be two-piece construction. While much of the paint appears original, there may very well be some repainting. There are a few age cracks, consistent with a piece of this age. It is subject to third party shipping costs.
