Packet Ship Ivanhoe: Huge Powder Horn With Nautical and Masonic Motifs. Unbelievably large (approximately 24" long) powder horn dated 1881 and inscribed by its maker "Louis M. F. Gavin Maker on Board the Ship Ivanhoe". The Ivanhoe was a passenger packet ship operated by Taylor & Merrill, beginning in the late 1840s. The horn is densely populated. Images include the ship itself, elongated fish, birds carrying hopeful or inspiring messages, a large Masonic edifice or temple captioned "Le Grand Architec Protege La Fraternité", a sunburst with heart & hand, crucifix and anchor, encircling vines and four wreaths containing the birth and marriage records of A. H. and Ada Herriman of Bangor, Maine with their three children born in 1863, 1865 and 1875. Outstanding workmanship. Lacks plug, although there is no indication one was ever present. A few small pieces missing on one side, at bottom edge, with some cracks (the area affected measures approximately .5" x 3.75").
