    Description

Mid 19th Century Pine Texas Biedermeier-Influenced Secretary Desk, from Fayetteville, Texas, cabinet maker unknown. As with many of the Texas cabinet makers who immigrated from Germany, the style of the furniture they built was influenced by Biedermeier designs popular in Europe at that time. This desk with the curved legs is a great example of that influence. Marked in pencil on the inside of the bookcase door an inscription reads, "Arthur Frank received this desk 1971." It was believed that, according to the original auction description, that Arthur Frank was the grandson of the cabinet maker. The only record we can find is a similar table with the same distinctive legs, pictured in Texas Furniture The Cabinet Makers and their Work 1840-1880 that was given to Hulda Franke in 1873 as a wedding present.
    Bookcase: 38" x 43" x 9.5" deep.
Desk: 40" across a slant top, 29" tall.

Condition: Excellent patina, pegged and square nailed. Interior desk dividers. Original hardware.

Provenance: Purchased in 1988 from the Estate Auction of well - known Texas collector Dr. G. R. Wagner of Bastrop, Texas.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
