Large 38 Star U.S. Flag, Possibly from Fort Abraham Lincoln. This 107" x 51" flag came with the adjacent Fort Lincoln painting, and it has the proper number of stars to date from the same 1870s era. However, no documentation survives directly to the Fort.

It is certainly of sufficient quality of manufacture, being of single weave wool bunting, with individually sewn cotton stars on both sides and stitched, folded-over stripes. Each star is 2 1/8" in diameter. It is probable that, if a military flag, it would be classified as a storm and recruiting flag, as headquarters and post flags were larger. It is in very good overall condition, showing only minor wear and a few inconsequential small holes.

Heritage research failed to identify the "T. Marston, Norton" lettered on the hoist. Possibly this was a former owner or the name of one of the many vendors from whom the Government and the Army procured flags. Aside from its possible Fort Abraham Lincoln association, it is a fine example of a 38-star flag.
