John Trumbull: A Large Charcoal Sketch of Washington Aide Lt. Col. Robert Hanson Harrison, For Trumbull's Epic Painting "The Capture of the Hessians at Trenton". This monumental work, now housed at the Yale University Art Gallery, took Trumbull over a decade to complete (1786 - 1797). Extremely fastidious in his work, Trumbull endeavored to paint a number of the men depicted from life, and then incorporated these images into his masterwork. One of the two mounted figures behind Washington is Col. Hanson (1745-1790), who came from a prominent Maryland family and who, after studying law, followed Joseph Reed as Washington's secretary in November 1775. He remained part of Washington's immediate staff until 1781. Harrison went on to become chief justice of the General Court of Maryland and turned down an appointment by Washington to the United States Supreme Court in 1789. A prominent member of the Federalist Party, he received six electoral votes for president in the first presidential election in 1789.

This impressive large portrait, measuring 23.5" x 28.5", was closely followed by Trumbull when it was incorporated into the final work. It is executed on paper, over which Trumbull had drawn a grid of squares to assist him in his work. Visible around the periphery are working notes, presumably in Trumbull's own hand, referring to details such as "eye line" and "hair line," which should be the subject of further scholarship. The paper is lightly wrinkled overall, but otherwise the work is in excellent condition with a very appealing display presence. Nicely custom framed to 27" x 32".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
