    Description

A Plate from the Bien Edition of Audubon's The Birds of America

John James Audubon (1785-1851). Great Footed Hawk. Falco Peregrinus. Gmel. Male 1., Female 2. Green-Winged, Teal and Gadwal.
Drawn from nature by J.J. Audubon. New York: Bien, 1860. Original chromolithographic plate from the Bien double-elephant Folio edition of John James Audubon's The Birds ofAmerica published between 1858 and 1860. Approximate sheet size: 40 x 28 inches. Approximate frame size: 48 x 37 inches. A fine image of two great-footed hawks from scarcest edition of the greatest illustrated natural history work to be produced in America during the nineteenth century.

This print is being offered as a high-quality decorative print and has not been examined out of the frame. (It is matted, framed and glazed.)
The Bien Edition is the one of the earliest and best examples of American chromolithography and can be counted among the finest books ever published using this technology. It was sold by subscription, beginning in 1858, but the project was halted due to the Civil War. Only about 150 of the Audubon plates were completed. (The original double-elephant folio edition boasted 435 plates.) Julius Bien of New York was a German immigrant and an early pioneer in America of chromolithography. A lovely and attractive print in very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
