    Description

James Otto Lewis Print: The Pipe Dance and The Tomahawk Dance of the Chippeway tribe. Hand colored, 19" x 11.5". Painted "at the treaty of Prairie du Chien 1825 by J. O. Lewis." Lithographed by Lehman & Duval. James Lewis began painting Native Americans in 1823. Between 1825 and 1828, the United States Indian Department commissioned him to attend treaty ceremonies. While at these ceremonies, Lewis rendered portraits and interviewed chiefs and subsequently published the first collection of native North American portraits, the North American Aboriginal Port-Folio.

Lithographers George Lehman and Peter S. Duval worked together as a firm in Philadelphia from 1835 through 1837, when Lehman left the firm and the name was changed. The Chippewa (Ojibwe) lived near Lake Superior until their lands were gradually taken away by treaties such as the Treaty of Prairie du Chien. The top border has some chipping; fine. From the U. I. "Chick" and Cecilia Harris Collection.
