    Italo-Corinthian Bronze Helmet with Spike.

    Of typical form with added spike. Size: 340 x 260 mm [ 10 1/4 - 7 3/4 - 7 1/4 inches ].
Date: Circa Fourth Century B.C. Note: In the paperwork that accompanies the helmet, Dr. Michael Vickers notes that "Early helmets were cast in a bronze of thick gauge until it was discovered that the impact of a blow was better dispersed by a thinner gauge bronze. This helmet is the latter. The helmet when it was made would have been bright as gold and the interior lined with cork". Dr. Michael Vickers, at the time when this helmet was presented to him, was a member of the Greek and Roman Department at The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England. Together with 2 page document dated 26-7-1997 (July 26, 1997) to previous owner on ANTIQUUS letterhead describing the helmet in detail.
Provenance: Texas Private Collection, acquired from ANTIQUUS, circa 1997.

Condition: Fair considering its age and current configuration. Appears to be mostly ancient with recent and later repairs, surface with multiple issues. Great form, the spike, later replacement and/or addition. Missing portion to rim, interior is consolidated negligently.
