George Washington: Four 18th Century Engravings. It is interesting to monitor the evolvement of the Washington image, as represented in the four examples presented here: 1) an 8.5" x 11.25" portrait of "George Washington Eqer. General en Chef de l'Armee Anglo-Americaine" attributed to Jean-Victor Dupin, published by Esnauts and Rapilly of Paris, no date, Hart 743, 2) an 8.5" x 11.5" portrait by Prunau of Paris titled "George Washington Commandant en Chef des Armees des Etats-Unis de l'Amerique", a copy of the William Sharp engraving in reverse, circa 1780s (a rattlesnake protects the Liberty Cap and staff), 3) a slightly trimmed 5.5" x 7.25" portrait by Bonneville and Ruotee of Paris published in 1796, Hart 172, and 4) a 4.25" x 7" civilian portrait of "G. Washington" published by R. Campbell & Company in 1798, Baker 274, Wick 64.
