Four Legal Documents Pertaining to Slaves. An especially fine group as follows:
Partially printed court case, one page with docketing, 8.5" x 13.75", Decatur County, Georgia, October 31, 1857. Signed by 20 jurors, the case involves over-charging for a ferry ride in violation of state law. The defendant's "servant, a negro man slave" took the money. Light stains, else very good condition.
Manuscript legal document, one page, 7.5" x 6", Dooley County, Georgia, December 24, 1857. A fascinating oath to enforce prohibition along racial lines. It reads in part, "I William R. Dawson do solemnly swear that I will not during the next twelve months sell barter give or furnish to any slave or slaves or free persons of color any quantity of distilled spirits...". A few small stains, else very good condition.
Partially printed receipt, one page, 8.25" x 5.5, Columbia, South Carolina, n.d., but 1860s. Here one Henry Glenn documents $1800 received in compensation for a male slave lost to the Confederate Government while being employed on fortifications. Fine condition.
Sheriff's report of a slave sale. Manuscript document, one page with verso docketing, 7.75" x 10.25", Fayette County, Georgia, April 16, 1864. Three slaves are named as being auctioned in this late war document. A 2" x 1" area of tape bleed-through, else expected aging and very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
