War of 1812 Era Reverse Painting of Oliver Hazard Perry's Great Victory on Lake Erie. This fabulous early American patriotic mirror exhibits a classic flat beveled face frame of mahogany veneer and side application over native pine. The top of the two-section design houses a stunning and brightly colored 9.5" x 7" reverse-painting on glass above a 9.5" x 13.5" mirror; both are original. The back of the frame is sealed by original rough-sawn pine. The period painting shows a scene of the Battle of Lake Erie within a decorative, eagle-topped border. Lettered in gold on a banner beneath is "LAKE ERIE Sept 10 1813". This battle, of course, was a very important victory by Perry. It allowed U.S. control of the lake for the duration of the war and led to the re-capturing of Detroit. His famous pronouncement of victory over the British, "We have met the enemy and they are ours; two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop," is still well known and often repeated. This item is in excellent condition with only a light blemish in the painted sky on the right side beneath the eagle's wing. None of the flaking or separation often seen on these period pieces is evident here. An amazing piece of folk art with a connection to a major naval victory in our country's infancy. 14.5" x 26" overall size in frame.
