Remarkable Indian Wars Folk Art Cane belonging to a Member of the Famed 12th Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army. The 12th is one of the oldest and most decorated unites of the U.S. Army, having fought in seven conflicts beginning with its formation during the Civil War. Some of its most distinguished service took place during the Indian Wars from 1866 through 1891. It was involved in the Modoc War (Capt. Jack) in California from 1872-73, the campaign against the Bannocks in the Northwest in 1878, and against the Sioux at Pine Ridge in 1890-91. Six Congressional Medals of Honor were awarded to members of the 12th for heroism during the Indian Wars.

This superb cane features an expressive and masterfully-rendered head of a trooper, carved whale tooth or walrus tooth. It is "mechanical," as a separate cigar moves in and out of the trooper's mouth. Below is a band of copper or rose gold engraved: "B/12" (for Company B, 12th Regiment). The shaft is of rich snake wood, with copper tip. Great condition, with a rich patina of age. Length 35".
