Remarkable Folk Art Pie Dough Crimper. These wooden implements are familiar 19th century kitchen tools, and sometimes creative carving or decoration raises them to folk art status. This is the most fascinating example we have ever encountered. It was probably carved on shipboard by a seaman traveling in the South Seas; the style of the bird and particularly the presence of the lizard clearly convey that flavor. While sailing vessels wandered through the South Seas' trade routes in the early to mid-19th century, such voyages became even more common as trans-oceanic steamship travel became practical around mid-century. Artifacts from these early South Seas travels are highly prized, and this motif on an early New England pie crimper makes for a great item! Excellent condition. 8" x 3.5".
