Legendary Texas Photographer Wilfred D. Smithers Designed Lampshade and Lamp. Wilfred D. Smithers was certainly Texas' version of the Renaissance man. He was a photographer, historian, newspaper correspondent, inventor, artist, mapmaker, photographer of the early aviation industry, teamster, naturalist, soldier, and of course, the originator of the photo color lamp shade. Smithers was born in Mexico in 1895, where he lived until he was ten years old; an experience that no doubt shaped his later work and passion for the Southwest and Mexican cultures. In 1936 he opened a small photography shop, this is where he began making and designing these photo lampshades. People from all over would come to his shop and pick out pictures from his cache or bring their own negatives; from these Smithers and his employees would make the lampshades. The normal motifs for his lamps were Big Bend ranching, landscapes, plants, and animals. This lamp in particular features a photograph of a deer. The photos are set onto wire frames and dried pieces of animal hide that have been laced together with thick, brown leather laces. The laces crisscross over the hide along the vertical borders of the photograph. The base of the lamp is three actual hooves of a deer, prepared by a taxidermist, and then bound together with three metal bands. This is a very rustic piece and combines the feel of the Southwest with a more outdoorsy and natural feel. All of Smithers lampshades are masterpieces in their own right, but often are enhanced by the lamps on which they sit. Courtesy of Jacob and Sherrie Stringer. The high bid placed by via mail, fax, the Internet or telephone will be entered as the opening bid for the lot during the live portion of the silent auction.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
