Commander of the Ill-fated U.S.S. Maine

Folk Art: Swordfish Painted Sword. 44" long sword apparently made from the front appendage of a swordfish. The blade is painted on one side with images of an anchor, ship's steering wheel, compass, swordfish, American eagle with flag, an ocean liner, two sailboats and a dingy. The grip, pommel and guard are made of bentwood and three-wood marquetry. Titled "Swordfishing" at the far end, it is signed by the artist "C. D. Sigsbee 1884". Excellent condition.

Charles Dwight Sigsbee (1845-1923) served in the navy, on-and-off, from 1862 to 1907 when he retired. His specialty was hydrography. He invented the Sigsbee Sounding Machine which attained the status of a standard piece of deep-water oceanographic equipment for five decades. He is perhaps best known as the commander of the battleship Maine when it exploded in Havana harbor in February 1898. He and his officers were exonerated by a court of inquiry. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1903 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
