Eight Steel Engravings From Goethe's Reineke Fuchs Including the Suppressed Illustration.

From Reineke Fuchs, Munich: Verlag der Literarisch-artistischen Anstalt, 1846 by Wolfgang von Goethe, illustrated by Wilhelm von Kaulbach with plates engraved by R. Rahn and A. Schleich.

In 1794 Goethe adapted a medieval version of Reynard the Fox to produce an epic poem, supposedly influenced by the events of the French Revolution. This lot of eight delightfully humorous steel engravings includes the infamous illustration banned for moral reasons at the time and seven other scenes from the poem. Additionally the title page, illustrated half-title page, and binder notes from the original edition are included. Each plate measures 10.25 x 12.75 inches. Each illustration is in very good condition with only some occasional light foxing and toning to the margins of the pages.
