Paris Porcelain Patriotic Punch Bowl. This porcelain punch bowl is 5 1/2" tall and 9" across. It has a profusion of gilding which leads us to attribute it as a piece of Paris ("Vieux Paris") porcelain. There is gold banding on both sides of the rim and on the base. There are gilt floral designs in the inside and the outside. The design of most interest appears on both sides of the bowl and consists of an American eagle, the slogan "E Pluribus Unum" on a banner above the eagle, implements of war, sails or banners on some sort of rigging, and two hand-painted American flags. The stars in the canton are arranged in a "Great Star" or "Grand Luminary" pattern. We counted twenty-six stars on one of the flags which, if accurate, would date this piece to 1837-1845; however, it could easily be earlier. It appears to utilize the same "blank" as that seen on a punch bowl owned by President James Monroe dated 1822-1827. The only defect we detect is a .75" chip to the base which would not be visible when displayed.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
