    Description

Original 600 Bomb Squadron, 398th Bomb Group A-2 Flight Jacket with Painted Back. The russet horsehide leather U.S. Army Air Force A-2 flight jacket, the back painted, depicting a voluptuous red-head pin-up with the legend: "Night Mission" painted in shades of blue above. Below are two rows of painted bombs and two red sinking ships, depicting bombing missions and sunken ships. The front left chest bears an original painted leather patch of the 600th Bomb Squadron being, a cartoon character of a diving duck grasping a red bomb in a dive. Sleeve with nicely painted image of the 8th Army Air Force headquarters patch. Front left pocket containing detached original leather Army Air Force name tag reading: C.F. Craig. Two flap pockets on front with knit wool cuffs and waistband. Original polished brown cotton lining. The 600th Bomb Squadron was activated in early 1943 as a B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomb squadron, trained under II Bomber Command. Deployed to England in November 1943, assigned to the ETO, VIII Army Air Force as a strategic bombardment squadron. Participated in the air offensive over German and Occupied Europe until the German capitulation in May 1945. Personnel demobilized in England and returned to the United States; squadron reassigned to Third Army Air Force for reorganization, however demobilization and Japanese Capitulation in August led to inactivation in August 1945. A search of 600th BG roster shows no C.F. Craig listed. According to group historians, there was no aircraft in the unit with the name "Night Mission" which hints that the jacket could have been embellished from its original format. Condition: Very good. Scattered wear overall with small hole at top of left shoulder. Minor snags to cuffs and waistband. Associated airman's nametag separated but included in front pocket.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
