Oil Painting That Hung in the Home of Jesse James. It is said that Jesse was dusting a painting when he was shot in the back of the head by Bob Ford, and Wilbur Zink liked to believe that this was the painting! In any case, its James family provenance is solid. A typed label on the reverse reads: "This painting hung in Jesse James home and later his widow Zee's home. This was in Jesse's grandson's collection that I purchased. Lawrence Barr." (A number of other James artifacts are known to have come through Barr.) Written across the top of the back in pencil: "From the Jesse James home - from [illegible] Barr his grandson. "

The oil painting, measuring 17" x 11" as framed, depicts what would appear to be a European scene of several buildings and mountains around a lake, and is in excellent condition. While our research has failed to turn up any contemporary description of the painting Jesse was dusting, this could prove to be a priceless James relic should a description ever be uncovered.
