Mark Twain: Period Painting Attributed to James Carroll Beckwith. This oil on canvas, mounted on board, depicts Mark Twain and measures 10" x 14". There is a pencil inscription on the back side: "Mark Twain. J.C.B." James Carroll Beckwith (1852-1917) was born in Twain's boyhood hometown of Hannibal, Missouri. He was an associate of John Singer Sergeant, William Merrit Chase, and Thomas Eakins. He had a very distinguished career and was known primarily for his portraits, including one of Mark Twain done in 1890. This work may date from that period. It also has some similarity to a photograph of Twain taken in 1902, during a visit to Hannibal. The condition is excellent. The painting is housed in a non-period frame and was purchased by the consignor in Blue Springs, Missouri around ten years ago.
