Ivy League Rowing Competition: 1877 Sexton Cup Trophy. 11" silver gilt plated trophy by Reed & Barton, given to the captain and crew of the winning boat in a competition between teams from Harvard and Yale. The cup component rests on a "stand" of three oars secured with rope. The base has water lilies and a decorative border of escutcheons or shields. Rope handles and garlands of water lilies drape the cup. One side of the cup depicts the two sculling teams in action on the Connecticut River in Springfield, Massachusetts. The other side is engraved "William A. Bancroft June 30th 1877" along with the names of nine of the winning crew members. The race was four miles in length and won by the Harvard team by a mere eight seconds over their rivals. Bancroft would serve three terms as mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts. A beautiful piece in exceptional condition.
