    Description

Impressive Remington-Inspired Hand-Painted Lamp. Words will not likely do this Western-theme glass lamp justice. It is quite impressive. It consists of a 17" cylindrical base with slightly bulging sides, an 11" globe and a 14" clear glass chimney. Fully assembled, it stands an imposing 31". The brass base is marked "F G CO 294". The globe rests on a brass reservoir and burner, but the piece has been electrified. The base and globe have been hand-painted with Western subjects which are very much in the style of Frederick Remington. The base has a mounted soldier pointing his rifle at a fleeing figure on horseback. The other side has a bust portrait of a rugged-appearing soldier. The globe depicts three soldiers and a scout who have dismounted and are defending themselves against an Indian attack. One of the soldiers appears to be wounded and is using his horse as a shield. The other side of the globe shows a bearded soldier with a white hat who gives all appearances of being a veteran of the Confederate army. We are unsure of the age, but suspect it may date from the 1880-1900 period. Anyone who is enamored with tales of the West is sure to love it!

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
