George Washington: William Birch Enamel on Copper Miniature Dated 1796. 51 mm x 63 mm [2" x 2.5"] enamel on copper miniature portrait of George Washington, set within a gold frame with filled back and suspension loop at top. Inscribed in tiny letters in the lower right "W.B. 1796". Typical firing imperfections, notably two lateral cracks that run from one side to another, under Washington's chin, plus some edge roughness, visible only at an angle.

William Birch was a celebrated English painter and enamellist who exhibited his work at the Royal Academy and Society of Artists. He and his family emigrated to Philadelphia in 1795. He introduced enamel painting to America and received wide acclaim as well as a number of commissions. He made approximately sixty miniatures of Washington, after the portrait by Gilbert Stuart. Some were signed, some were not. Some were dated, some were not. This is a particularly fine example, made the more noteworthy due to the signature and date, coinciding with Washington's last year in office as President.
