Description

    George Washington: Commemorative Bronze Plaque. 12.25" bronze plaque with bust of Washington facing left, titled "George Washington 1731 1799". Inscribed along the edge: " R. O. Smith Sc. © 1916 Jno. Williams Inc. N.Y." Two mounting screws/posts on verso with suspension loop in place. Some scattered verdigris consistent with public display over a period of time.

    The designer of this large piece is R. Ostrander Smith, regarded as one of the most recognizable stamp designers at the start of the twentieth century. He designed all 14 stamps of the famous and highly collectible Series 1902 for the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, most notoriously the 2c carmine Washington "Flag" stamp.
