Description

Concord Stagecoach: A Marvelous, Large Handcrafted Scale Model. This coach is modeled on a specific well documented Concord coach. It was completed at the Abbott Downing & Co. works in August 1866 at an original cost of $1250. Although originally delivered in New York, it made its way to California, where it had a long, well documented history, running from Santa Barbara to Newhall prior to 1886, and from San Diego to El Cajon from 1886-1910. It is presently a featured display at the San Diego Historical Society Museum.

This scale model is nothing short of amazing in its detail. Clearly "handcrafted" should not be confused with "handmade." The quality is such that it may well be one of those miniature replicas which Abbott Downing is known to have made for clients. The original name on the model coach has been over-painted with the name "Diamond Tally Ho." During restoration of the full-size coach, an old photograph was discovered showing that it once bore the same name before being changed to "El Cajon & Lakeside."

Of the various types of horse-drawn conveyances which served as "coaches" in the nineteenth century, the Concord Coach was perhaps the finest and best known. It featured a unique suspension system that made the ride over rough terrain as comfortable as possible for passengers. Some 3000 Concord Coaches were built by the Abbott Downing Co. between 1865 and the early 1900s. Although also in wide use in the East, it was their role in connecting the far-flung outposts of civilization in the West, oft-portrayed in movie and television tales of the Wild West, which qualifies these stagecoaches as true Legends of the Wild West.

This miniature coach is an exact duplicate of the full-sized one, down to the minutest details. All parts that are supposed to work do - the wheels, brakes, front axle, whipple tree, single trees, pole, etc. The parts that are supposed to come apart do. Even the wheels are made exactly like the originals, including miniscule bolts to hold the metal rims in place. The interior detail is as precise as the exterior, the seats upholstered in properly configured green fabric. The quality of the paintwork, including fine black pin striping and gold details, is consistent. All in all, it is certainly one of the finest scale models of any subject that we have ever encountered. It is in beautiful display condition. For strictest accuracy we note that four tiny pins that help attach the body to the braces are missing, and the leather boot cover is loose. One of the driver's steps is missing, and the brazing has separated on pieces of the roof luggage rack. These are all trivial flaws and easily restored. Length is 32.5", height 13.25". The rear wheels are 7.5" in diameter. A truly wonderful miniature stagecoach, probably of nineteenth century vintage, that really deserves to be viewed and appreciated in person.
