Abraham Lincoln: Large Bust by Peter David Edstrom. Life-size 26" tall bust of a beardless Lincoln, made of terra cotta with bronze armored finish. The artist was Peter David Edstrom (1873-1938), a native of Sweden who emigrated with his family to Iowa as a child and eventually spent his later years in Los Angeles. He was one of the founders of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and specialized in historical busts. This example is signed on one side "Peter David Edstrom 1926". There is some scattered chipping to the finish, exposing the underlying medium. It is fairly heavy, perhaps 100 lbs. and is hollow inside. Given the date, it may have been inspired by the 1924 First National motion picture, "The Dramatic Life of Abraham Lincoln". Edstrom was comfortable in the Hollywood milieu and did a bust of another legend, actress Gloria Swanson.
