[Henry Trumbull]. Engraving: "A View of Colonel Johnson's Engagement with the Savages (commanded by Tecumseh) near the Moravian Town, October 5th, 1812 [sic]." This beautifully, hand-colored fold out, measuring 15" x 8.25", is found in Henry Trumbull's "History of the Discovery of America; of the Landing of our Forefathers at Plymouth, and of their most Remarkable Engagement with the Indians in New-England, From their First Landing in 1620, Until the Final Subjugation of the Natives in 1679." Boston: Published by J. P. Peaslee, 1828. 8vo, 256 pages. Leather over boards with border and floral designs in gilt on boards and spine. Remnant of spine label. Clear dust jacket. Heavily toned and foxed throughout. Engraving shows some toning and chipping along the edges. Some separation with the text block near the top.

Tecumseh spent much of his life attempting to rally disparate American Indian tribes in a mutual defense of their lands, eventually leading to his death in the War of 1812. The battle depicted, commonly known as the Battle of the Thames, actually took place on October 5, 1813, near Chatham, Ontario, Canada. It was an American victory in which Tecumseh was killed and his coalition destroyed. Colonel Richard Johnson, future vice president under Van Buren, is traditionally credited with killing Tecumseh.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
