    Description

Comic Hand-Colored Lithograph of Forty-Niner. Small folio hand-colored lithograph published by Kellogg & Comstock of Hartford, Connecticut and is titled "The Independent Gold Hunter On His Way to California. I Neither Borrow Nor Lend." It depicts the intrepid, but perhaps naïve, miner loaded with all necessary supplies and headed to the California gold fields. He has a kettle strapped to his head, carries a pick & shovel, pan, gold scales, a teapot, a suitcase, a bottle of unknown liquid, fish & sausage, three Bowie knives and a pepperbox pistol. The print is archivally matted and framed and appears to have had some cleaning and restoration. It was likely published around 1850 and reflects the public perception of those infected with gold fever.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
