Description

Frank James Pocket Watch. Obtained by Wilbur Zink from Forster Barr, Jesse's grandson. The typed I.D. card is Wilbur's; however, we could locate no further provenance. This is an inexpensive Ingersoll Reliance watch of a type that would have been for everyday use, not for dress. Not running and sweep hand is missing.

Please note: Some concern has been raised as to whether this watch predates Frank's death in 1915. Fortunately Heritage has on staff one of the top watch experts, Jim Wolf, who is Director of our Timepiece department. Jim Wolf states that the movement of this watch could well date as early as the turn of the century. As for the watch faced marked "Ingersoll Reliant," he is unaware of any specific evidence confirming the use of that term before 1915, but points out that the production of these inexpensive watches was somewhat chaotic, and that the lack of specific information is not conclusive.

What is known is that this watch came from a James descendant who declared that it had been part of Frank and Anna James' estate. Anna died 29 years after Frank, at the age of 91. Accordingly, it is possible that this watch belonged to someone else, perhaps their son Robert. However, inasmuch as some items coming from this source were attributed to specific individuals and others simply to the James family, it seems likely that that the association of this watch with Frank James, if unverifiable, is correct.
