"Football" Engraved Open Face Pocket Watch Circa 1900. The football scene on the back of this 2" diameter watch is very similar to the one described in lot 25047. This one is accomplished with a much higher relief and more detail; eight young men are having a football game in the park. The ball carrier is straight-arming a defender as three others run toward him ready to make the tackle. It shows three of his teammates in the background which raises the question in this cataloguer's mind as to why they weren't blocking for him! The scene is surrounded by a decorative foliate border which is repeated on the front bezel. The back opens to an additional cover over the 7 jewel Swiss movement. The Roman-numeraled dial has no markings but features a sunken seconds dial at the 6:00 position. This watch is crown wound and set, is in excellent condition, and keeping time. A perfect item for the football fan and who isn't one of those?

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
