Booker T. Washington in his College Days. An important set of five (5) large mounted albumen class portraits from the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute including one portrait with Booker T. Washington posed with the graduating class of 1875. Four of the photographs are 12" x 8.5" (17" x 14" overall) with one smaller portrait, 8" x 6" (12" x 10" overall). Washington can be seen in the front row of the 1875 class photo, second from the left, noted with a small cross and his name at the extreme bottom of the photograph. Also included are photos of the classes of 1876 and 1877 as well as two unknown class photographs. One is quite unusual, showing students posing with musical instruments as well as rowing oars, while others display implements of various crafts including a blacksmith's anvil, saws, shovels, axes, and leather-working tools. Condition overall is quite good, the photographs themselves very clear and sharp with only moderate age foxing to mounts and only minor faults. A wonderful collection of studies from the waning days of Reconstruction.
