THE DEMON OF ANDERSONVILLE SCAFFOLD SOUVENIR. A grim souvenir consisting of a 2 1/2 x 1" silver of pine, inscribed in pencil "Piece of the scaffold on which Capt. Wirz (the Andersonville prison keeper) was hung in the yard of the Old Capitol Prison Nov. 10th '65 Washington, DC." The souvenir was originally included in a letter sent by a Union soldier who witnessed the execution of the notorious Wirz, whom many felt was a scape-goat. That letter was preserved and is included in this lot. It was written from Sherbourne Barracks in Washington, DC on November 26, 1865 by William Cuthbert. "...the Andersonville Prison Keeper Capt. Wirz was hung here on the tenth of this month in the Old Capitol Prison yard. Our company was their I seen him hung and I got a piece of the Scaffold he was hung on and I send you a piece of the wood in this letter..." Four of the Lincoln conspirators were also hung at this location. Great!
