1864-DATED CHARLESTON SLAVE TAG, "MECHANIC". Another of the premier pieces in this "collection". Not only is it for a rare trade, but is is probably the last known Charleston tag.  Any with Civil War dating are extremely rare. Ford had an 1862 "servant" example, which Stacks' described: "This appears to be the penultimate (next-to-last) year for Charleston, South Carolina slave for hire badges, for we know of none dated 1864." Yet here one is, in most pleasing very fine condition!  The Ford 1862 tag sold for $5500. This on is a "mechanic" tag, 2 years later. Provenance: Richard Harzog, World Exonumia, 1984.
