    Description

1851 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 703. A flat diamond-shaped tag with a hole at the top for suspension, 53mm x 55mm. The corners are not clipped, typical of certain badges manufactured by William M. Rouse this year. The elements on the front are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; "1851" bar punched; "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; and an incuse "703" in individual punches. The condition is extremely fine with a deep, dark patina, very sharp and clear devices and a generally smooth surface. There is only a hint of verdigris and roughness along the edges. An excellent badge for display.

Charleston city records show the payment to W. M. Rouse in 1851 was for "making the following Badges: Servants, 3,500 [55.1%]; Porters, 1,600 [25.2%]; Mechanics, 600 [9.4%]; Fruiterers, 500 [7.9%]; Fishers, 150 [2.4%]." This gives us at least an insight as to the relative scarcity of the different occupations manufactured during this era.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
