    Description

1851 Charleston PORTER Slave Hire Badge, Number 815. A flat diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole at the top for suspension, 47mm x 49mm. Many badges for this year have unclipped corners; Porter badges, though, are generally found with their corners clipped. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; "1851" bar punched; "PORTER" in a rectangular punch; and an incuse "815" in individual punches. Very fine with dark brown patina and hints of verdigris across the surface.
