    Description

    1850 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 1564. A flat diamond shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole at the top for suspension, 48mm x 50mm. Manufactured by a local silversmith and jeweler named William Meredith Rouse. There is no hallmark as none were used during this period. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "1564" in individual punches; "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; and "1850" bar punched. The condition is about fine with a dark patina and some wear to the elements.

    There were an estimated 4135 badges sold for the year 1850.
