    Description

1848 Charleston MECHANIC Slave Hire Badge. Number 263. A flat diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners, a hole at the top for suspension, 56mm x 55mm. Manufactured by local silversmith William M. Rouse under contract to the city council. The elements on the front are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "263" in individual punches; "MECHANIC" in a rectangular punch; and "1848" bar punched. This excavated badge is in very good condition with rough surfaces and a certain amount of verdigris, though the elements are all readable. The Mechanic occupation is scarce and thus desirable.
