    Description

1835 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 810. A flat diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole for suspension. There is no hallmark; local silversmiths Peter and John Mood manufactured the badges this year. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "810" in individual punches; "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; and "1835" bar punched. The condition is good with several creases and splits. It is well-preserved, with a pleasing brown patina and light, normal wear.

These badges were worn by slaves who were hired out by their masters during slack periods. The practice of producing and issuing such tags, for a fee, began in 1800 and continued through the Civil War. The tags were produced each year and marked with the occupation of the wearer. As such, they became obsolete when new tags were issued, and discarded.
