    Description

1825 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 1340. A slightly convex diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole at the top for suspension, 65mm x 68mm. The "LAFAR" hallmark of John Joseph LaFar is punched on the obverse at the bottom; this would be the last year of the three-year period where his hallmark was on the obverse instead of the reverse. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "*CHARLESTON*" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; "1825" bar punched; "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; "No" in a square punch followed by an incuse "1340" in individual punches; and, as mentioned, "LAFAR" in a rectangular punch. The condition of this tag is fine. The brown patina exhibits areas of darker brown and russet.

The authors of Slave Badges and the Slave-Hire System in Charleston, South Carolina, 1783-1865 estimate the total number of 1825 badges produced to be 3269 for which LaFar was paid $466.25 by the city. Charleston, in turn, took in $5,397 in fees for the badges- a nice addition to the city coffers. It's amazing that out of 3000+ badges produced, only a handful remain extant.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
